What to Expect as a New Patient

The first step in our program is to collect lab data so we can start your treatment plan at your very first visit. The cost of labs is built into our program. This includes a blood draw and a saliva collection kit. The saliva kit will be mailed to you with a pre-paid FedEx bag for easy return. For the blood draw, you can visit our Mankato office if you're local. If you do not live near Mankato, we can help you find a draw center closer to you or Rupa Health offers mobile phlebotomy services that come to your home for an additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hormonal imbalances can significantly impact a woman’s mood, weight, energy levels, fertility, and overall well-being. Functional Medicine provides a comprehensive approach to restoring hormone balance by:

  • Comprehensive hormone testing – Analyzing estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol to pinpoint imbalances.
  • Supporting the body’s natural hormone production – Through targeted nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and herbal or bioidentical hormone support when necessary.
  • Addressing root causes – Treating issues such as insulin resistance (linked to PCOS), adrenal dysfunction (chronic stress), and estrogen dominance (common in PMS and perimenopause).
  • Managing menopause symptoms naturally – Supporting mood stability, bone health, metabolism, and sleep without unnecessary medications.

Functional Medicine helps women feel more balanced, energized, and symptom-free, whether dealing with PMS, irregular periods, infertility, or menopause-related changes.

Gut health plays a critical role in hormone regulation, immune function, and metabolism. Many women suffer from IBS, bloating, acid reflux, and food sensitivities without realizing these issues could be linked to hormonal imbalances, stress, or inflammation.

Functional Medicine improves digestion by:

  • Identifying food sensitivities and intolerances (such as gluten and dairy).
  • Healing leaky gut and reducing inflammation to improve absorption of nutrients.
  • Restoring gut bacteria (microbiome balance) with probiotics and prebiotics.
  • Supporting digestion and metabolism with enzymes and gut-friendly foods.
  • Reducing bloating and IBS symptoms through stress management and dietary modifications.

When gut health is optimized, hormone balance, energy levels, and metabolism also improve.

Absolutely! Many women experience brain fog, anxiety, depression, or difficulty handling stress, often due to:

  • Hormonal imbalances (low progesterone, estrogen dominance, high cortisol).
  • Nutrient deficiencies (low magnesium, B vitamins, and omega-3s).
  • Gut-brain connection issues (poor digestion affecting neurotransmitter production).
  • Chronic stress and adrenal fatigue leading to burnout and fatigue.

Functional Medicine addresses mental well-being by:

  • Supporting neurotransmitter balance (dopamine, serotonin, and GABA).
  • Reducing inflammation affecting brain function.
  • Improving sleep quality and stress response with lifestyle and nutritional support.

Women often report better focus, mood stability, and improved mental energy when implementing Functional Medicine strategies.

The timeline depends on your specific health concerns, current lifestyle, and level of commitment to making changes. However, many women experience:

  • More energy, better sleep, and improved digestion within 2-4 weeks.
  • Reduced PMS, menstrual regularity, and better mood within 1-3 months.
  • Sustained weight loss and improved metabolism within 3-6 months.
  • Significant improvements in chronic conditions (thyroid, gut health, autoimmunity) within 6-12 months.

Because Functional Medicine treats the root cause, results are long-lasting and sustainable rather than temporary fixes.

Many men ignore early symptoms of health issues, assuming they are just part of aging. However, these signs may indicate underlying imbalances that Functional Medicine can address:

  • Low energy and persistent fatigue
  • Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise
  • Brain fog, memory issues, and lack of focus
  • Low libido and sexual dysfunction
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  • Frequent bloating, acid reflux, or gut issues
  • Muscle loss and increased body fat
  • Chronic pain or inflammation

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, Functional Medicine can help uncover why they are happening and develop a plan to restore your vitality.

Yes! Many men struggle with stubborn weight gain, slow metabolism, and insulin resistance, even with exercise and dieting. Functional Medicine approaches weight management by:

  • Evaluating insulin sensitivity, blood sugar control, and metabolic function through comprehensive lab work.
  • Addressing hormonal imbalances (low testosterone, thyroid dysfunction, and cortisol issues can impact metabolism).
  • Identifying and reducing inflammation and gut health issues, which can interfere with weight loss.
  • Providing personalized dietary and exercise strategies to optimize fat burning and muscle retention.

If traditional weight loss methods haven’t worked, a Functional Medicine approach may help you finally see results by treating the underlying imbalances preventing fat loss.

Testosterone and other hormone imbalances can significantly impact a man’s energy, mood, metabolism, and overall well-being. Functional Medicine addresses hormonal imbalances by:

  • Identifying the root cause – Advanced lab testing assesses testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid function, and estrogen levels to pinpoint imbalances.
  • Addressing lifestyle factors – Sleep, stress, poor diet, and environmental toxins can contribute to low testosterone. Functional Medicine provides strategies to optimize these areas.
  • Balancing hormones naturally – Through nutrition, targeted supplementation, exercise, and stress management, we support the body’s ability to produce and regulate hormones.
  • Considering bioidentical hormone therapy (if needed) – In cases of severe testosterone deficiency, natural hormone replacement therapy may be an option.

Functional Medicine is a personalized, root-cause approach to healthcare that focuses on treating the underlying causes of health issues rather than just managing symptoms. For men, this means addressing concerns like hormonal imbalances, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular health, and chronic fatigue through targeted nutrition, lifestyle modifications, advanced testing, and, when necessary, supplementation or medication.

Unlike conventional medicine, which often prescribes medications for symptom relief, Functional Medicine takes a holistic approach by identifying and treating imbalances in the body’s systems—such as the endocrine (hormone), digestive, and immune systems—to restore optimal function and long-term health.
